A characterful Late Victorian ruby and diamond gypsy ring, crafted in warm 15ct yellow gold and believed to date to circa 1880–1900.
At its centre sits a beautifully vibrant round ruby, glowing with rich pinkish-red colour and flanked by two rose-cut diamonds. Each stone is set low into the broad gold band within an individual recessed square setting – a distinctive style associated with Victorian gypsy rings and wonderfully practical for everyday wear.
The shoulders are particularly lovely, decorated on both sides with hand-engraved starburst and foliate detailing. More than a century of wear has softened the engraving and given the gold a wonderfully mellow patina, retaining all the charm and individuality you would hope to find in a genuine antique piece.
The original hallmarks have become considerably worn with age, although the 15 and .625 marks remain visible, confirming 15ct gold. The assay office and date letter can no longer be identified with sufficient certainty. As 15ct gold was a recognised British standard between 1854 and 1932, and taking into account the ring's construction and characteristic design, we believe it most likely dates to the late Victorian period, circa 1880–1900.
